Artell pleased with growing centre-half partnership between Ray and Nugent.
David Artell has been encouraged with the developing central defensive partnership between George Ray and Ben Nugent. Crewe Alexandra have managed to keep three clean-sheets in our last four games and Artell says that the defensive pair have to keep on improving as we enter the run-in.
Both players are out of contract at the end of the season and Artell wants them to show they are worthy of extending their stay at the club after impressively forcing their way into his plans.
Ray and Nugent had been limited to first-team opportunities under previous boss Steve Davis in the first part of the season but have impressed following their recalls.
The Alex boss told crewealex.net: “The pair of them are doing well. They are doing their jobs well. I have played with George and he is a good player. People say that he has a mistake in him and that every four or five games he makes one, well I’ve not seen one!
“He has to make sure that he doesn’t make any with eight games to go. He has been really consistent and a good leader in the dressing room.
“Ben is a good player. He is a heart on the sleeve kind of guy and sometimes he plays with emotion but he is still young. When he learns to control that then he is going to be a really good player. I am sure he will with the experience he is getting.
“They complement each other well. One is right footed and one is left for a start. They are forming a good partnership and let’s hope it continues. “
