Boss: "I Want That Healthy Competition"

22 June 2017

David Artell has told the club’s official website that he considers competition for places as a positive. The Crewe Alexandra boss appreciates that there are going to be some disappointed players missing out on a starting place when the new EFL League Two season kicks-off again on 5th August – but he says making his selection on merit is part of the job.

The Crewe boss has added Chris Porter and Jordan Bowery to his forward line this summer and he has stated that those in form will secure their place.

“I only see competition for places as healthy. I want that competition because we have a good squad, ‘says David.

“I’m sure that there will not be many who will play 50 games this season, so there will be chances there for everyone. There is a chance for them to impress every day, in training and for the U-23s. They have to grab that chance.

“I want them to compete for the shirts and if we have that in every position then that will improve us. I want to keep them on their toes. If they don’t play, then they will know why and what they need to do to make sure they get in the team. I cannot take the chance for them. They have to take it.”
