Transfer Market Will Gather Pace

28 July 2017

Crewe Alexandra boss David Artell fully expects the transfer market to gather some pace as we enter August. Artell has already signed five new players this summer and he has not ruled out adding to that number if the right players’ comes along before the window closes.

The Alex boss says that the fact that players contracts are set to expire at the end of the month will prompt agents to desperately seek a new club for them.

Artell told the club’s official web-site: “We are still active and I am talking to agents most nights. We are still assessing our options and we only want to sign good players and players we need.

“If a good player comes along and it is right for us then we would act. We are in a position to do the business and there is still time. The window doesn’t close until the end of August.

“We will remain patient and make sure that if the right ones come along it is right for us. I don’t want to be regretting it and although every transfer is a gamble, you don’t want to make too many mistakes.

“Players who are going out of contract in the lower leagues will now not be paid. Their severance pay ends at the end of July, so with no money coming in they will be looking to find a new club.

The boss added: “It doesn’t even matter if they have a family or not, they need to feed themselves and as a footballer they would have created a decent lifestyle, so I would imagine that if they are going out contract they will have every reason to start focussing their minds.”
