Boss Prepared To Still Experiment

25 July 2017

David Artell says he will continue to use the remaining pre-season friendlies against Macclesfield, Bala Town and Stoke City to try different things.

The Crewe Alexandra boss selected youngster Harry Pickering at left-back against Bury on Saturday and midfielder Tom Lowery came into the starting line-up following a late injury scare to striker Chris Porter. Porter, who wasn’t played as a precaution, is fine and could yet be involved at Moss Rose this evening.

Artell also tinkered with his personnel with Brad Walker utilised further forward and Ryan Wintle asked to do the anchor midfield role. It worked well with Walker heading our goal in the 1-1 draw at Gigg Lane.

The Crewe boss said: “We will try different things in the last few games. We did that on Saturday at Bury. Some things I was really pleased with and other things need some work. There were a lot of positives to take from it. Harry (Pickering) came in and was terrific for us.

“We also pushed Brad further forward and he was terrific as well. He scored another goal playing in a more advanced role, so that is something we will look at again. I’m sure I will look at thing and consider tying things in our three remaining pre-season games. The players know that the door is open for them to impress and get themselves in the team."
