Artell: "Good & Bad From Macc Performance"

26 July 2017

David Artell says there were good and bad aspects to take from our latest pre-season performance at Moss Rose.

Crewe Alexandra lost 3-0 to Macclesfield Town after conceding three second half goals, but Artell says it is important not to be caught up in the result. The Alex boss says that the staff and players will go through the DVD of the game today to highlight the positives and negatives from the game.

The Crewe boss told the club’s official web-site: “Over the 90 minutes there were good and bad again. Some of the performances we were pleased with. Others we were not. We have lost 3-0 and it is important not to get caught out by the result. It is still about getting what we wanted from it.

“We will go through the DVD and dissect the parts of it we need to. I thought we played some good football in the first half but we weren’t quite crisp enough around their box. We could have scored a few but we didn’t. It was a case of could have and should have but the fact is we have lost 3-0 and we were disappointed with the goals we conceded.

“I didn’t think it was a penalty. The lad miskicked it and went over but I’m not here to bash the referee. It was a poor decision but I much prefer he does it in pre-season rather than when the season kicks off.

“We were then very deep for the second goal and Ben had to leave his line and come out of the box. The lad then got across Michael (Raynes) for the third goal with the last kick of the game.

He added: “There were more negatives than positives but we are learning all the time about them. In the end, it was a typical Crewe performance and maybe they were a bit tired from the work we have done, but they have got to get used to that because being a professional footballer means you have to play Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday.  That is the challenge for all of them.”
