U23: Sheff Wed 1-2 Crewe

Bingham & Kirk give Morris' side victory

Crewe Alexandra Under 23’s moved up to third in the U23 Professional Development League North table after an impressive 2-1 victory at league leaders Sheffield Wednesday.

The returning Billy Bingham, and Charlie Kirk, notched a goal each in the second half to secure the victory after the experienced Gary Hooper had given the Owls a half-time advantage.

The 29-year-old striker was making his long-awaited return from injury in the match and he put Wednesday ahead on 42 minutes through a counter attack after an Alex move broke down. He was slipped in one-on-one & coolly finished past Dave Richards.

Crewe responded immediately after the break with two quick-fire efforts. Bingham headed home Kirk’s inswinging free-kick on 50 minutes as he marked his own comeback from injury with a goal.

Three minutes later and the lively Kirk got his name on the score-sheet, teasing over another devastating inswinging cross that this time missed everyone & eluded the keeper to creep into the far corner.

The remainder of the contest was a tight game with the Owls trying to grab the equaliser, but Alex Morris’ side held firm to record the impressive victory.

Crewe:  Richards, Wilkinson (Sass-Davies), Trialist, Ng, Bakayogo, Finney, Bingham, Ainley, Pickering, Kirk, Dale (Reilly)
