Artell On Pickering Midfield Switch

21 December 2017

David Artell admits that he has switched Academy graduate Harry Pickering into midfield to help us manipulate the ball better. Pickering partnered fellow youngster Tom Lowery in central midfield in our 3-0 win over Crawley Town last weekend and although he had to leave the field late on after smashing into an advertising hoarding, he had played a major part in securing the points for the Railwaymen.

The Crewe boss told the club’s official website:  “After the Cheltenham performance we spoke to the players about looking after the football a lot better. For me that performance was unacceptable and it was really disappointing.

“We have worked hard out on the training ground to improve what we do in possession and I think we showed improvement against Blackburn and Crawley.

“Tommy and Harry have come through the Academy and they manipulate the ball well. They have grown up playing that way. That is to take nothing away from Conor (Grant) who has had a similar upbringing at Everton.

“We have been onto the midfield players to be more courageous on the ball. We want them to be adventurous and look to pass the ball forward and hurt the opposition. They are taking that on board. “
