Subs Helped Raise The Tempo

22 August 2017

David Artell highlighted the contribution of his two substitutes in changing the tempo of the game on Saturday.

The Crewe Alexandra boss introduced the fit-again Zoumana Bakayogo and Callum Ainley to try something different to unlock a stubborn Barnet defence and it was Bakayogo’s thrusting run and cross from the left hand side that created the only goal of the game for striker Chris Porter.

Porter’s fourth goal of the season sealed Crewe’s first three points of the campaign and Artell praised the impact of his subs.

David told the club’s official web-site: “I’m glad to have Zooms back. He is a terrific fella. He trains properly every day and is good to have around the place. His attitude is spot on and that is what makes a professional footballer rather than an amateur one.

“He deserved all the plaudits coming his way from Saturday because he and Callum Ainley helped change the game. They improve the tempo and they made sure that the wing-backs they were up against were pushed back.

“Zooms offered us that penetration from the left and it was a great cross for the goal. We just went with something different and that is what you want your subs to do as a manager. You want them to have an impact on the game like those two did for us at the weekend.

He added: “I’ve been saying for a long time that our season won’t be about 5 players, 10 players, 11 players but a squad of 25 players’. Saturday proved that.”
