Boss Not Fussed By ABBA Switch

9 August 2017

David Artell says he is not overly concerned with the new ABBA penalty format. The authorities have decided that the first team taking a penalty in a shoot-out may be receiving an advantage, so they have elected to alter the structure this season.

The ABBA format was first used in this season’s Community Shield at the weekend with Arsenal running out 4-1 winners from the spot against current champions Chelsea.

Artell, who could see his Crewe team facing a shoot-out to decide tonight’s Carabao Cup tie against Bolton Wanderers, isn’t too fussed!

The honest Crewe boss told the media: “It is what it is, if the authorities say that's the fairest way that's fine.

“You basically ask who wants to take a penalty, then who fancies going first? Second, fifth or whatever. It doesn’t make a difference to me if there is a different order now. It is about mindset and technique for me.

The boss added: “It shouldn't matter whether you take all five together. Like somebody once sang the winner takes it all.”
