Crewe Alexandra boss David Artell says he may use this evening’s Checkatrade Trophy against Newcastle United’s Development Squad to give some of his fringe players some game time.
The Crewe boss may give some of the players who have some knocks a deserved rest ahead of the weekend trip to Grimsby Town.
The likes of Harry Pickering, Jordan Bowery and Charlie Kirk will be hoping to be handed an opportunity to impress at the Alexandra Stadium tonight.
Artell told crewealex.net: “The game may present an opportunity for a few of them who may need some game time. It may present me with chance to give a few of those who have slight knocks to have the night off.
“Some players will relish having some minutes, but we know what this competition can bring so why would I not be taking it seriously?
“I just feel that we have players here, who we need to test to see if they can make the step up. I genuinely believe that they can because they wouldn’t be here otherwise. I have great faith in them but until you throw them in and give them a chance then you never know.
“I am a firm believer that they are good enough and they may get a crack of the whip today to show what they can do.”
