Crewe Alexandra Under 23's ended 2016/17 on a high with a hard-fought 2-1 victory at Sheffield United's Bramall Lane.

A first defeat in 11 at home to Watford last week had effectively ended the team's chances of reaching the end of season play-offs, but Alex Morris' side can hold their heads high after with that run now reading nine victories & just that one defeat in the final 12 games.

A Charlie Kirk penalty & Callum Saunders headed either side of half-time won the game against the Blades after the hosts had taken the lead midway through the first period.

Oliver Greaves scored that opener for United, firing in a rebound after Graham Kelly's initial shot was saved.

Crewe found themselves level within ten minutes of the opener from the penalty spot. Dan Udoh was brought down in the area & Kirk stepped up to send the keeper the wrong way.

In an end-to-end encounter, either side had chances to win it, but it was Crewe that found the vital goal with Saunders heading home from close range with ten minutes remaining on the clock to seal the points for the Alex.
