Crewe To Wait On Ray

19 April 2017

Captain faces a race against time to prove his fitness after back injury.

Crewe Alexandra captain George Ray remains a doubt for this weekend’s home game against Leyton Orient after being forced off at half-time against Yeovil Town on Easter Monday. Ray was struggling with a back injury and it became considerably worse after he landed on his lower back when challenging for a header at a corner.

Ray was unable to continue after the interval and was replaced by Ryan Wintle. The versatile Billy Bingham switched to centre-half and performed admirably in an unfamiliar position alongside Perry Ng.

With Ben Nugent (knee) and Jon Guthrie (hernia) also ruled out and Harry Davis unavailable after his loan spell at St. Mirren was cut short due to a knee injury, Crewe are short of first choice centre-halves and boss David Artell will give his skipper as long as possible to prove his fitness.
