U23: Colchester 1-4 Crewe

20 September 2016

Udoh & Saunders notch a brace apiece in comfortable win

Alex Morris took a strong Crewe Alexandra Under 23 side to Colchester as was rewarded with an emphatic 4-1 victory with Daniel Udoh (2) & Callum Saunders (2) on the score sheet.

The side was full of first team experience, with George Ray & Ben Nugent featuring at centre-half, with Perry Ng & Ryan Wintle in central midfield and Callum Ainley & Charlie Kirk on the flanks.

Saunders gave The Alex the lead early on, Callum Bullock unloading a perfect right-wing cross for the forward to head home from close range.

Not long after and the home side, playing on their first team pitch at The Weston Homes Community Stadium, drew level at 1-1 on 14 minutes when Denny Johnstone got in on the angle to rifle a shot past the helpless Dave Richards.

Saunders struck for his second of the game mid-way through the period, a long diagonal ball found Udoh who's sublime first touch and thrashed cross across the face of goal gave Callum the simple job of tapping in.

Udoh deservedly added his name to the score sheet four minutes before half-time to give Crewe a 3-1 advantage, flicking in another pinpoint Bullock cross.

After a lively first half, the game slowed down considerably in the second period, but Udoh managed to double his tally and make it four for The Alex with 84 minutes on the clock when he slammed in from close range after Bullock's initial effort was denied.
