The Door Could Re-Open For Wintle

13 September 2016

Midfielders appearances for the U-23s have caught the eye of late.

Steve Davis says that the unfortunate injury to the on-loan Liam Smith could now re-open the door for 19-year-old midfielder Ryan Wintle. The former Alsager Town teenager made his professional debut last season, but an untimely foot injury limited his appearances to just three from the substitutes’ bench.

Wintle has caught the eye in Alex Morris’ Development Squad of late and the news that Smith is set for another lengthy spell on the sidelines could now see him back in the first-team picture.

Steve Davis told crewealex.net: “It is unfortunate to lose Liam because he does have ability but we can get round it. I have three midfielders with Jonah, Danny and Billy and that is three I can rely on if I want to play with two or with three.

“We also have Ryan (Wintle). He has been the best player for the U-23s in the last few games and he will now come into that. He is still only 19 and has a lot of potential.

“I could also play Callum (Ainley) in there or change the shape slightly. We will see how it works out because I do like to have four but Liam’s misfortune is a chance for someone else.

The boss added: “It is something we will assess again in January if needs be but Ryan may come in and show that he should be answer.”
