Steve: "We Found A Way To Win"

3 September 2016

Steve Davis gives us his post-match reaction following dramatic 2-1 win over Doncaster.

Steve added: "It was close between who was going to play and Billy Bingham has been good for us. Most of the players have played alright this season, so it is nice to have that selection headache."

"He needs to keep getting in there because things will drop for him. The more times he gets forward, the more he will get used to it and be more confident he will become when the ball drops for him. He has great energy to get up and down the pitch and Danny (Hollands) will give him that platform to get forward.

"We have been encouraging Jonah to get up there and get in the box more. He knows he has to add goals to his game, so we are all delighted for him. He got his reward today. I thought he had lost his chance when it dropped when he had that touch but he has turned and got his shot off.

"I agreed with the penalty decision if he was holding his shirt and the players have to understand that the officials are looking for those type of incidents inside the box. They were told in the summer about it, but the officials have to be consistent with it, so I expect a penalty if one of my players is held back inside the box.

"What we need in tough games like that is everybody at it and they were. They worked hard to keep them out and then took their chances when we had them. I thought we scored two good goals. Dagnall has chased a ball down and produced a beautiful cross for Lowey. It was accurate and had the pace on it, so Ryan only had to get his head on it from about three or four yards out. It was a wonderful delivery and a good header.

"We found a way to win after conceding the penalty and that is very promising. We showed great character to go again and try to win the game. It took a great effort because make no mistake about it, Doncaster are a good side and it was a tough game for us. They dominated parts of that second half and when they got through, Ben has made some fine saves at crucial times.

Following the 2-1 win at Gresty Road, Steve told us: "It was a great result for us and it was about time we had a win like that. We have put on good performances before and not got our reward. We had to ride our luck at times today and I am sure Darren (Ferguson) and his players will be thinking in there that they deserve more than they got today, but we created some chances and scored two good goals.

Steve Davis was delighted with his team's great character after they came back from the disappointment of conceding a soft penalty for shirt pulling at a corner to go on and score again in the 87th minute. Midfielder Jame Jones popped up inside the penalty area to seal three points with his first goal since February 2015.
