Steve: "Holding Rule Is A Good One"

6 September 2016

Alex boss asks for consistent decision making on holding in the box.

Steve Davis says his players are fully aware of the consequences when it comes to shirt pulling in the penalty area. Defender Harry Davis conceded a penalty kick against Doncaster Rovers at the weekend after he was adjudged to have pulled Tommy Rowe’s shirt at a corner. Former Premier League referee Lee Probert pointed to the spot and Rowe got up to beat Ben Garratt.

Thankfully, Crewe went up the other end and found a winner five minutes later thanks to James Jones’ first goal of the season.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “I was disappointed to concede the penalty because the players are aware of the ruling. The officials are looking for it and it was a poor way to concede a goal after the way we had kept them out.

“I couldn’t really see it at the time. There was a lot of bodies in there and I would imagine our players were being pushed and pulled as well but everyone knows the rules and I think it is a good rule to have.

“The officials have to be consistent with it and not just at the top end. We have one awarded against us now so we just need them to be consistent if one of ours has his shirt pulled in the opposition penalty area.”
