Guthrie: "We Are Defending Well As A Team"

13 September 2016

Jon says that everyone is determined to limit chances for the opposition.

Jon Guthrie has told the club’s official web-site that he is pleased to have ‘nailed down’ his favoured centre-half position after previously playing the majority of his senior outings at left-back.

Guthrie, 24, has now amassed 108 club appearances over the past four seasons and his current form means there is no starting place for Ben Nugent or George Ray at the moment.

Guthrie has emerged as one of the first names on the team-sheet and he is pleased that is now in the centre of the Crewe defence.

The former Pewsey Vale defender said: “I am pleased that I have managed to nail down my place at centre-half. The club brought me here as a centre-half and it is where I have always wanted to play, so it is nice to be in the team and having a run in that position.

“Playing at left-back is different but I didn’t mind playing there too much because it meant I was playing and gaining experience.

“Having a settled back four always helps and we are all defending well as a team. When the forwards are defending from the front, it only makes you want to defend better because you can see how hard they are working for the team and you don’t want to let them down.

Jon added: “They chase around up there and put pressure on and that only help us as defenders. Having their experience here, and I include Danny (Hollands) in that, has made a massive difference to us. They know the game better than anyone and you can see how motivated they are in training to do well. It cannot fail not to rub off on you as a player. “
