Davis: "We Have Set Early Marker"

6 September 2016

Results against Pompey and Donny show that we can compete with the best in the division.

Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis says that Saturday’s hard fought win over Doncaster Rovers has set a high marker for the season. Crewe recorded a superb 2-1 win at Gresty Road with midfielder James Jones netting a late winner with his first goal of the season.

Davis full expects Darren Ferguson’s Doncaster side to be up there challenging for promotion at the end of the season and the Crewe boss is hoping that our morale boosting first home win of the season will set up us nicely for our home game against Exeter this weekend.

Steve told crewealex.net: “It was a great result for us on Saturday because Doncaster are a strong side and I fully expect them to be up challenging at the end of the season.

“We have now played two of the clubs who are favourites for promotion and managed to pick up four points. Doncaster and Portsmouth will be many people’s favourites for automatic promotion, so they have been good results for us.

“We have set down an early marker and the good thing about Saturday was the resilience we showed to come through it. We kept going and had to stand up to a lot of pressure, especially in the second half.

“When you are up against it like that, you need everyone. You cannot afford to carry anyone and the younger players are beginning to grasp the other side of the game, that real work ethic to remain in games.

“We held in there, rode our luck a bit at times, but we came back well from the penalty incident and found another goal. It is important to show that resilience and show that we can go again after a set-back.”
