Guthrie was not risked with both centre-halves one booking away from suspensions.
Steve Davis revealed that one of the reasons he elected to rest Jon Guthrie last night for our Checkatrade Trophy tie against Chesterfield was because the centre-half and his regular defensive partner Harry Davis are both one booking away from a suspension. The former Cardiff City and Yeovil Town defender Ben Nugent was handed his third appearance of the season and performed admirably at the heart of the Crewe defence.
Steve told the club’s official web-site: “I had to balance things out with my selection because both centre-halves are a booking away from a suspension. I chose to give Jon (Guthrie) a rest because we didn’t want one of them to get booked or worst still both of them.
“We needed to keep one for the weekend just in case. Ben came in and the centre-halves did okay. They could have done one or two things better but they didn’t make too many mistakes.
“With the injuries we have, it is like having a big jigsaw puzzle at the moment and it is a question of making sure those bits fit on Saturday.”
