The FA Cup Can Make Players

5 November 2016

Steve Davis says the FA Cup is perfect platform to showcase talent.

Steve Davis believes that the FA Cup can be the making of young players and he hopes that some of his own can step up to the mark later today against Cheltenham. The Alex boss respects the traditional and glory attached to the FA Cup competition and he is targeting progression into the round two draw which takes place on Monday evening.

Ahead of our trip to Whaddon Road, Steve told crewealex.net: “The FA Cup can make a young player. It has done in the past. If a player catches the eye in the rounds then it is great exposure for them.

“The players should want to shine in the competition and do well. I do think it is a different generation now when it comes to the FA Cup because when I was growing up, it really was special. Players dreamed of winning the FA Cup and playing at Wembley. It was the competition and it has lost a bit of that.

“The FA Cup competition was a massive competition and whilst players respect it and want to do well in it, it has lost some of the spotlight. The new generation have not grown up in that environment. It’s definitely changed.

“When you were a non-league player there was nothing better than getting the chance to play against a League team and challenge yourself. It didn’t get any better than that but I think it is different now.

He added: “I’m sure our more experienced players will be letting the younger know what it means to everyone.”
