Lunt: "Sheffield Deserved To Win"

2 November 2016

Alex youth team boss frustrated by our performance at Bramall Lane.

Youth team manager Kenny Lunt told Crewe Alex PlayerHD that Sheffield United deserved winners of our FA Youth Cup tie at Bramall Lane. The Alex suffered defeat in stoppage time to lose 2-1 after previously taking an early lead through striker Luke Walley after he charged down a clearance from the goalkeeper in the opening minutes.

The young Blades continued to press forward in the second half and Crewe’s resolve finally broke, conceding twice in the final 14 minutes to see us exit the competition at the first round stage. Lunt though says the performance merited our exit.

Kenny said: “I thought Sheffield United thoroughly deserved their victory. We didn’t play anywhere near the standard we have set ourselves.

“We started the game well and I thought we were the better team in the opening ten minutes or so but after we scored, he stopped playing anything like we can play, which was disappointing. Maybe in a silly way the goal came too early for us.

“We knew what Sheffield United would do and that they would be a threat from set pieces, corners, long throws and we didn’t keep the ball enough. We couldn’t get hold of it up the pitch and spent most of the time defending. I thought our centre-halves did well when you consider the pressure they were under, especially in the second half.

“We are more disappointed with the performance that anything because we know they can play better than that. But these games are for us to learn about the players and it is shame that some of them could not handle the occasion.”
