Back Four Has Been Destabilised

17 November 2016

Boss says back five relationship has been fractured by injuries.

Crewe Alexandra manager Steve Davis says that the injuries we have recently suffered has ruined the relationship, of what had been a stable back five at the beginning of the season.

Davis had the luxury of naming Garratt, Turton, Davis, Guthrie and Zoumana for much of the season, but we have recently lost our regular full-backs through injury and Guthrie was forced to move to left-back to replace Bakayogo. Ben Nugent was recalled on Tuesday evening to play alongside Harry Davis at centre-half.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “The injuries have destabilised us, especially in the back four. We have had to make three changes in the back four and it looks fractured at the moment because before the injuries the back four had picked themselves.

“They had a good relationship and they were fairly consistent. It was settled and Wycombe aside, we had defended reasonably well in most games.

“To be fair to those that have had to come in, we have not had too much time to work with the back four because of the mid-week fixtures.

He added: “We haven’t been able to do much work on the shape with them but they know the job and hopefully we will see that improvement on Saturday.”
