Mental Strength Has To Improve

Boss says this players have to outcome mental fragility

Steve Davis says that some of his players will have to overcome their mental fragility if they are to have a successful career in the game. The Alex boss believes that his Crewe Alexandra side are not that far off after being in many matches this season, only to see a mistake or a lack of concentration cost us in the end.

Only Coventry and Peterborough have really ran away with games against this season.

The Alex boss feels that a difficult season has affected the mental attitude of some of his players when it comes to protecting a lead or trying to hold out for a result.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “When you play like we did in the second half against Sheffield United and then again against Bradford, especially in the first half, then you expect to get something out of it.

“That is what has happened on too many occasions this season. Some of them tend to accept that we will play reasonably well but will eventually succumb to a defeat. It has become a habit and that is the mental side that they will have to overcome.

“There are positives signs as well. The spirit in the squad is good and the character is there to keep going and try to fight back. We were 2-0 down at Sheffield United and came back to level before they scored late on to win the game.

“We probably didn’t get what we deserved over Easter after two decent performances from us but that has been the story for much of the season.

The boss added: “We lacked a goalscorer against Bradford. I just didn’t see where we were going to get a goal. Brad has scored 9 goals and at the moment there doesn’t seem anyone else who can get double figured and more.”
