Dario says Powell has the ability to play for England
Dario Gradi believes that if Nick Powell had remained injury free, he could well have been considered for the England squad participating in the European Championships in France.
Powell, 22, has endured a frustrating time with injuries over the last three seasons and as a result, he was recently released by Manchester United after being limited to just 9 first-team appearances.
Dario, who agreed to the sale of Powell to the FA Cup winners back in 2012, feels that the former Crewe Alexandra youngster has been unable to fulfil his true potential but still has the ability to come again.
Dario told the club’s official web-site: “I haven’t seen Nick for a while but I’m sure we will at some point over the summer. I know he has struggled physically over the last few seasons but if a club can get him fit and running around again, then he has incredible ability.
“If he had remained injury free and Alex had stayed at Manchester United as his manager then I am sure he would have been challenging for an England place. He is certainly good enough and if he had been able to get a couple of years of experience at the top level then he would have been ready.
“He is a match winner and it’s a shame that he has been so unlucky with injuries, but he is still young. He may have to adjust and adapt his game but he still has time to have a very good career.”
