Defender targets positive season following disappoitment of relegation.
Defender Jon Guthrie says that beating his previous best when it comes to appearances has only increased his confidence. Guthrie was one of the bright lights emerging from a disappointing season with his consistent displays seeing him named as his team-mates’ choice for Player-of-the-Season.
Guthrie, 23, made a personal best of 42 appearances for the club last season and marked it with his first goal at senior level, with a close range effort against Barnsley in February.
Jon told Crewealex PlayerHD: “I probably went into the season as fourth choice centre-back, so I had to force my way in and the hard work and the consistency paid off for me. I managed to make the most appearances in the season and to do that is a great feeling.
“Towards the end of the season, I would have hoped that I was one of the first players to be picked and when that happens, it gives you great confidence.
“Being able to play the two positions certainly helped me. I could swap from left-back to centre-half but I am happy to play anywhere.
“I also managed to score my first goal, which was good because I should score more goals. The staff have spoken to me about that and that is something I want to improve on for next season. It wasn’t the best goal but it was still nice to see it hit me and go in!
Jon added: “Last season has gone now and we have to go into next season with a really positive attitude. League Two will be a tough ask in itself but we want to winning more games and challenging.”
