Collins: "Two Deserve Their Awards"

7 June 2016

James Collins on Player-of-the-Year recipients Garratt and Guthrie.

Ben Garratt and Jon Guthrie were worthy recipients of the club’s two main Player-of-the-Year awards accordingly to the club’s first-team coach James Collins. Goalkeeper Garratt won the supporters vote for their top performer over the last season with Guthrie winning the most votes from his fellow players.

Collins believes that the two players were the only real contenders following our disappointing relegation to League Two.

James told the club’s official web-site: “Ben and Jon thoroughly deserved their awards, although it was a disappointing season for the team. They were the only real candidates in my opinion.

“Ben has been terrific for us over the last few seasons and there is no doubt in my mind that he can play at a much higher level. He has a real calming influence and has a lot of games under his belt now. He has time on his side and there is still more to come from him. He has the potential to be a top goalkeeper.

“Jon has comfortably been our most improved player. He has really come on and established himself now. He was a bit wobbly when he first arrived but that is not surprising where he came from. He has been excellent for us this season.

James added: “Jon has been a mainstay of the team and although he can play at left-back, I think his best position is at centre-half. Now he has to push on and aim for another really consistent season.”
