Boss says switch to 4-4-2 has helped with defensive learning.
Steve Davis says that operating in a 4-4-2 formation on Friday evening allowed him to simplify the necessary defending for his young players.
Crewe started with new signings Ryan Lowe and Chris Dagnall in a new-look partnership at Buxton FC with youngsters’ Callum Ainley and Charlie Kirk supporting from the flanks.
Crewe fought back from 2-0 down to win 3-2, in what was a useful first run out of the pre-season.
In the second half, Crewe played with Ryan Wintle and George Cooper in wide areas, supporting Callum Saunders and goalscorer Daniel Udoh.
Steve told crewealex.net: “We went with 4-4-2 as it is very simple when it comes to the defending. The young players have to improve that aspect of their game and playing this system is the simplest way of them learning.
“They all have a bit to do on that. Callum and Charlie in the first half and then Ryan and George in the second half, they can all improve in their defending for the team. They all need to switch on to it more.
The boss added: “We will continue with this shape for the moment.”
