With the August deadline approaching, boss has been given green light to bring new face in
Steve Davis expects the Crewe Alexandra board to back him in the transfer market if he can find one or two more players to improve us. The Alex boss has been chasing an experienced midfield player for most of the summer but has only added the younger Liam Smith to his central options.
Smith picked up an ankle injury in the pre-season clash with Bolton Wanderers and is ruled out for the beginning of the season after suffering severe bone bruising.
Steve has also spoken about improving his options with a right-back and perhaps a target man striker to replace Marcus Haber, who left the club this summer.
Steve admits that the money the club have recently received for our former youngster Grant Hanley following his recent transfer from Blackburn to Newcastle has certainly helped the finances and the boss has been assured that there will be funds there if he can find the right players to help us.
Steve told crewealex.net: “If we can find one or two to make a difference then I know the board will support that. We have had a board meeting and if we can find the right ones then I can bring the options to the board and we’ll take it from there.
“The midfield players we targeted have signed for League One clubs, so it shows the type of calibre we were after.
“At this stage of the pre-season you do get players thrown at you. Their agents will be on now because the season is about to kick off and they haven’t been fixed up yet. It is getting late for some of them but we have to get the right fit.
He added: “The Grant Hanley money is a big help for us. It has improved the finances and it shows the importance of having those sell-on fees in place. When we help develop those players then it is only right we are rewarded further down the line.”
