Wigan Clash Could Be Just The Tonic

19 January 2016

Boss says underdog tag could help us spring surprise at the weekend.

Steve Davis says that this weekend’s home encounter at Wigan Athletic could just provide the springboard for his players to get over our 4-3 defeat at Swindon.

The Alex squad were dealt another late blow on Saturday after leading 3-1 at the interval and Davis says that the visit of Gary Caldwell’s Latics could provide just the tonic.

In-form Wigan are currently fifth in League One and are looking for an instant return to the Championship following their relegation last season.

Ahead of our meeting this weekend, Steve told crewealex.net: “It will be another tough game against one of the league’s in-form sides. Swindon were in decent form going into our game last weekend and now we have Wigan. That is why we want to stay in this league, we want to be playing the likes of Swindon and Wigan.

“It is another challenge for us and another big game but we have to be positive and use it to turn our fortunes around.

“When you feel you are the underdog and everything is against you, it is important that you come our fighting and that is what we will try and do on Saturday. It is up to all of us to stick together and prove people wrong.

“We will go out and try and win the game. That is what we always do and sometimes because we have taken those risks and tried to go on the front foot we have come unstuck at times this season but it is important we go into it with a positive mind-set and we have upset the odds in the past.

He added: “The likes of Bristol City last season and Sheffield United this season have come to our Stadium and we have beaten them, so we have done it in the past and there will be no better time to do it again against Wigan on Saturday.”
