Steve Davis challenges one of his own to step up and add goals on a consistent basis.
Steve Davis says it will remain a big challenge to escape the relegation trap door unless someone steps up to plate and manages to become a consistent goalscorer. The Alex boss has spoken of the impact the likes of Nicky Ajose, Chuks Aneke and Mathias Pogba have made over the last three seasons when it came to consistent goalscoring.
The Alex boss is hoping that his forward players can start to add to Ryan Colclough’s return of seven goals this season in all competitions.
With veteran striker Ryan Lowe returning to his parent club Bury following the conclusion of his loan deal, the Alex boss is hoping that someone else can emerge and start to contribute goals during the second half of the season.
The Crewe boss told crewealex.net: “The chances have been there for everyone and it is all about seizing that chance. We always try and give our young players a chance and they have to try and take it.
“In the past few seasons, I have been able to bring in a goalscorer that has helped us immensely. Nicky (Ajose) came in last season and scored something like 9 goals in his first 11/12 goals. Before that we had Chuks on loan who got 17 and Pogba scored 16 goals in our first season back in League One.
“Nick Powell did it for us in the league below and made a major contribution to see us promoted from that league. We haven’t had that this year. We have struggled for goals and it will be a different challenge this time around because we are looking for one of our own to come through and score the goals we need.
“The loan players like Nicky and Chuks have played a massive part in the past and now we are looking for one of our own to step up. It is a big challenge for them but we have to assess if they good enough to take that on.”
