Different Threat Posed By Clarke and Pope

26 January 2016

Steve Davis wary of physical presence of Bury's front duo

Crewe Alexandra manager Steve Davis says that Bury’s robust pairing of Leon Clarke and Tom Pope will present a different type of opposition to that of Wigan. The Alex boss is confident that his defensive pairing of Semi Ajayi and Ben Nugent will relish the physical battle that usually accompanies a meeting with Bury’s experienced duo.

Clarke, 30, has scored 16 goals in 27 appearances this season and Pope has chipped with a further six goals as his regular partner.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “Our defence will have to cope with a different proposition if Clarke and Pope play. They are more physically strong than what they faced against Wigan, they were more about movement and we had to concentrate.

and Clarke uses his body well and is prepared to run in behind. They complement each other well and they are always a handful. They can cause anyone problems.  “We know all about Popey from our battles with him when he was at Port Vale

“They are experienced players and when you look at Bury’s team there are not a lot of kids in there. They have done well this season and I’m sure they will be looking to kick on in the second half of the season.

“Our centre-halves will be relishing the contest. Semi is a big lad and athletic and he certainly doesn’t shy away from a physical battle and I think Ben prefers a battle anyway!”
