Boss On Caldwell's High Tempo Wigan

22 January 2016

Steve Davis previews this weekend's home clash with our North West neighbours.

Steve Davis says that this weekend’s opponents Wigan Athletic will ‘have a big say’ in the promotion race to reach the Championship. The Crewe Alexandra boss says that Gary Caldwell’s Wigan side are well equipped to finish in the one of the two automatic spots and regain their Championship status at the first time of asking. Wigan are currently 5th but in are just four points behind Walsall in second.

Ahead of this weekend’s North West clash, Steve told crewealex.net: “Wigan will have big day in the promotion race I’m sure. They have the largest budget in the league and their parachute payments coming down from the Premier League certainly helps at this level.

“They are a big club for this league and there is a lot of expectation on them but they have been on a really good run of late and they have some very good players.

“They will be looking to get out of the league as quickly as they can. They won’t want to be languishing in this league and they will be aware that it can happen. There are big clubs in this league.

“Gary likes his team to play at a high tempo. They like to take things quickly, throw-ins, free-kicks to try and catch your out. We have to be aware of that and try and do it to them.

“It should be a good game, played at a high tempo. It will be a challenge but we know we owe our fans a spirited and good performance at home. We haven’t won at home as much as we should have and the fans have been patient with us.

“They are expected to bring a large following tomorrow, so it should be a good atmosphere. Our fans will get behind us though and they can play their part as well. We are looking forward to it.”
