Steve: "Thin Dividing Lines Decided The Game"

27 February 2016

Alex boss gives us his post-match reaction following 2-1 defeat to Barnsley.

"I tried to inject some fresh legs because we looked a bit leggy today. Foxy looked tired and Jonah gave the ball away more today than I've ever seen him. We ran out of steam a bit and that is why we tried to change things around to try and make things happen. I was disappointed that we didn't create a lot of chances in that second half. We didn't have enough players playing to their potential today but that is not the reason we have lost the game. We lost because we made some poor decisions when conceding the two goals."

"We gave them a chance to get into the game with some poor defending and then a poor mistake has given them the chance from the free-kick. I thought they were better than us in the second half and looked the more likely. They looked lively up front and we ran out of energy a bit. Tom (Hitchcok) tired pretty quickly in the second half and Brad has not trained for most of the week to be fair because of illness.

"We want to carry that on in the second half and get on the front foot but we didn't do that as well and the difference in the end has been the quality of the set pieces. It has been a very thing dividing line again and we have reiterated the importance of limiting the number of mistakes they make. When you are down there, you do get punished.

"I thought we did fine in the first half and did well. I didn't think there was much in the game and we were very happy to go in at half-time one up. I didn't think Ben had too much to do expect deal with a few crosses and they didn't get in behind us. We were not that troubled.

"The second goal came after a poor decision to make that header and then Ben (Nugent) has made a poor error of judgment to make that tackle. It gave them a chance from the free-kick and I turned to James (Collins) and said they would score from it and they did. He struck it well and showed great technique to score. I'm not sure if Ben (Garratt) should have saved it. I will have to look at it again. It was just cruel to lose the game in that manner and the confidence they have build up over the last few months was a key factor.

Following the 2-1 defeat, Steve told the club's official web-site: "It was a bad result for us and I am disappointed with the goals we have conceded today. We have conceded from two set-pieces. It was poor defending from the corner and Winnall has escaped his man and has been able to bundle it in from close range.

Steve Davis was left ruing some poor decision making and some poor decisions as Barnsley fought back from 1-0 down at half-time to win 2-1 at the Alexandra Stadium. Barnsley are on a terrific run of results of late and kept their play-off hopes alive with that second half fightback - but the Crewe boss was disappointed in the manner in which we conceded the two goals from set-plays.
