Steve: "Mistakes Cost Us Badly"

20 February 2016

Steve Davis gives us his reaction following first defeat in seven games.

Steve Davis was disappointed with the result this afternoon but was pleased with the way we approached the game at Chesterfield. Crewe ended up losing 3-1 in a relegation battle but Davis was left ruing a number of missed chances.

The Alex were good in possession and conjured up some genuine chances to have really applied the pressure on Danny Wilson's side but we couldn't create that grandstand finish.

"It was a knock today. Its only three points but we wanted to go level with them this afternoon. Now we have to go again. We have been on a great little run, we would have liked to have won one or two of them along the way but it has shown what we are capable of. "

"We are short on numbers and we lost James Baillie yesterday, so that was another one. It was a young bench and now Semi is going back to Cardiff, so we would like to add one or two if we can. We will have to wrap them up in cotton wool next week and do as little as we can.

"The two young scholars were good in possession for us when they came on. They got on the ball and that is what we want them to do. Callum Ainley created two really good chances with his skill and Charlie (Kirk) grew into the game and showed some nice touches. He is a talented lad and the experience will benefit them both.

"We were looking dangerous and Brad (Inman) was getting into those little pockets and Zoumana was a threat. He was unwell and that is why I had to take him off. He had a stomach problem and has had to see the doctor so that was a blow because he was getting joy on the outside of Talbot.

"It is one of those games where you wonder how we have played well and ended up losing like that. We had good possession and we played in a relax fashion and created some decent chances.

Steve told the club's official web-site: "I thought we played some terrific football at times and had enough chances to have got something from the game. I thought the better team lost the game today and that is what I told them afterwards. What we didn't do well was defend. We gave them gifts for the goals and those individual errors have proved costly this afternoon. The full-back slipped for the first one and then we didn't pick up at the far post properly. The third one we didn't track the runner and we have got to defend better than that.
