Boss: "Points Rather Than Performance"

24 February 2016

Steve Davis says his team know the importance of our home form going into run-in.

Steve Davis has reiterated the need for ‘points rather than performance’ as we enter the vital final months of the campaign.

The Alex boss was understandably frustrated that his side’s unbeaten run came to an end against Chesterfield on Saturday after we had more fair share of the ball and had double the amount of shots than the home side. Even the Chesterfield boss Danny Wilson was complimentary about our performance against his side, but that was little consolation to Davis and his players after we got nothing for our efforts at the Proact Stadium.

Steve is now targeting another mini run of results but has stressed the importance of collecting three points as much as possible with 14 games left.

The Alex boss told “We can play reasonably well and not get anything for our efforts. I thought that was the case at Chesterfield at the weekend. Our individual errors cost us.

“It is points we need and sometimes you have to sacrifice the performance to achieve that. At this stage of the season, we don’t want to earning plaudits for our performances but end up with no points.

“We have got rid of the monkey on our back when it comes to winning at home. We know our home form is going to be crucial and we will need to win the majority of our home games to take some of the pressure off the away games.

“We have to play well. That always gives us the best chance of getting a result and it doesn’t matter who you play in this division. If you don’t play well and make mistakes then you will get punished.

The boss added: “There is no better satisfaction for you as a manager than playing well and winning the game in front of the home supports and that is what we will aim to do against Barnsley on Saturday.”
