Aim Now Is To Bounce Back

Steve Davis looking for response against Barnsley after unbeaten run came to an end against Chesterfield.

Steve Davis admits that the result at fellow strugglers Chesterfield was not what we wanted at the weekend, but the Crewe Alexandra boss is hoping to see a positive response at home to Barnsley this weekend.

Crewe slipped to their first defeat in seven games at the Proact Stadium on Saturday after individual errors proved costly in our 3-1 defeat to Danny Wilson’s side. Davis was relatively pleased with the performance but wants his team to be more clinical after creating double the number of chances Chesterfield did on the day.

Ahead of this weekend’s home encounter with his former club, Steve told crewealex.net: “The result wasn’t what we wanted, especially as we had gone into the game on the back of going six games unbeaten.

“The positive from the game was although we were beaten in the end, we played relatively well. When you play well and create chances then that gives you the best chance to win games. It is good for the confidence.

“The individual mistakes cost us and it has happened on far too many occasions this season. It is something we always try to eradicate. We can play well in a game and then a mistake or a succession of mistakes cost us.

“Take their first goal on Saturday. It was just a long clearance up the pitch and we thought Ben (Garratt) was coming out to collect it. He didn’t and Ben (Nugent) has sliced his clearance out for a needless corner. They then get another corner on the other side and Ollie (Turton) isn’t marking his man has closely as he should have been and it’s hit the post and spun in.

Steve added: “Our overall play was fine but we need to cut out those mistakes and be more clinical when we have chances of our own. Chesterfield were more clinical than us but I didn’t think they were better than us.”
