Alex boss praises Cambridge turnaround.
Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis has praised the work achieved by Shaun Derry in a short space of time. Cambridge United failed to win any of their opening seven league games at the beginning of the season and their form saw them slip into the relegation zone, but Derry’s hard work out on the training ground has allowed him to implement a winning formula and their recent transformation has seen them rise to their current position of 9th in the League Two table.
Ahead of our first trip to the Abbey Stadium since 1995, Steve said: “Shaun has done a great job in turning things around. He just needed some time and it goes to show what can be achieved in a relatively short space of time.
“They are a good example of what can happen when you string a succession of results together. Winning games and not getting beaten, increases confidence and restores the belief in the players. That is what we are aiming to do again.
“They play some good football and have good passages of play in the final third. They use Uche (Ikpeazu) as a target man but they also play some really good football. They have the lad (Luke) Berry who is doing well as a number 10 and they had a terrific result at Hartlepool last week. It will be a tough game.
He added: “I remember playing there against the likes of Dion Dublin but it has been a while since I’ve been there and Crewe have not been there for a number of years either. It will be nice to go somewhere different and it is up to us to perform.”
