Collins: "We Have To Play Our Football"

15 December 2016

James Collins says that it doesn't suit Crewe to try and fight our way out of League Two.

First team coach James Collins says that Crewe Alexandra will have to play their way out of League Two. Collins believes that it doesn’t suit the Crewe style or philosophy to try and ‘fight’ the opposition, but he instead wants our players to be brave in possession and play our brand of possession football.

Speaking at last night’s well attended fans forum, the coach said: “I want us to play the Crewe way and when I say that, I want fast and incisive football. It frustrates me as much as the fans when our build-up play is too slow or we go backwards.

“You cannot always play forward or through the lines but we drill it into the players to try. We want to play in their half and play our football.

“The last couple of games have not been god enough and everyone knows that. We can do a lot better than that and have done a lot better than that this season. At times we have played well and shown that we can compete against the top teams like Doncaster and Portsmouth.

“We have made it known to the players that we have to play our way. We cannot fight our way through games and get involved in that. We want to mix it up if necessary though and earn the right to play, but once we do that we want to play good football that is attractive on the eye.

He added: “That is what we strive to do every day in training.”
