U18: Crewe 2-0 Charlton

Lunt's youngsters seal first victory of campaign

Crewe Alexandra's Under 18's recorded a first victory of the 2016/17 Professional Development League Two season at the second attempt with a hard-fought 2-0 win over Charlton Athletic at Reaseheath.

Due to many of his second year scholars being needed for U23 duty, Manager Kenny Lunt fielded a youthful side packed with first year scholars still cutting their teeth at the level.

There wasn't much to choose between the sides in the first half, Luke Walley's shot hitting the post and then unfortunately bouncing off Lewis Reilly and flying over the top the closest either side came.

A change in approach, and personnel, eventually gave Crewe the lead. Substitute Oli Harrison came on after 65 minutes and within five minutes, he had nodded his first of the season. Regan Griffiths stood up the cross, Harrison's first header was parried back at him but he steered a second header into the roof of the net.

Reilly added a second in the 88th minute, curling a beautiful free-kick around the wall and into the bottom corner to ensure victory and a return of four points from the first two games after the opening day draw with Watford.

Crewe: Wardley, Woodcock, Sass-Davies, Manuel, Johnson, Lynch (Hurst), Offord, Lundstram, Griffiths (Barlow), Walley (Harrison), Reilly
