Boss says he would like to add competition to his team before the transfer deadline arrives.
Steve Davis says he would still like to strength his squad before the transfer deadline closes at the end of the month. The Crewe Alexandra boss appreciates that he is short of at least one midfield player and recent injuries to the on-loan Newcastle youngster Liam Smith and Billy Bingham have only highlighted that fact further.
Davis would like to improve the competition in his squad and would ideally like three more players to bolster his options and although he appreciates that number may be difficult to complete he would like to add some fresh faces before the summer window closes a the end of August.
Steve told crewealex.net: “I know I am short in certain positions and we would have to turn to some untried development players if we suffer a number of injuries. Ideally I would three more. Three better players that would offer real competition would make a really significant difference to us. One would make a major difference if we can get the right one in.
“I know getting three or four more would be difficult but that would be the ideal scenario because we cannot strengthen again until January. Maybe if we can get through against Blackburn or someone comes in for one of our own players, there may be some more money available to do that.
“We don’t particularly want to throw our development players into games if they are not quite ready but in a way that is what Crewe Alexandra is all about. We do give our young players that opportunity and it is up to them to show what they can do.
Steve added: “We may have to juggle things around for the Portsmouth game this week and let’s see if we can pull another rabbit out of the hat."
