Boss eager to tie up his most improved player on new deal
Steve Davis says he will sit down with Jon Guthrie shortly to discuss a new deal. The Alex boss is keen to tie down his much improved player to an extended contract as he starts to assess his squad going forward.

Steve told crewealex.net: “Jon has done really well considering where he has come from. It has taken him four seasons to adapt but he has now played 100 games and the improvement is there for everyone to see.
“He has played at left-back and left centre-back and I think he could even do a job in front of the back four because he is a good footballer. He is intelligent, big and quick and it is a role I have thought about for him.
“He is player who listens and wants to improve. When I spoke to him in the summer, I told them that he needed to be in as a much as possible doing the work, and to his credit he was. He had a short time with his family but he was up here doing extra. That foundation has done him good and he is getting the rewards for that.
On his new contract, Steve said: “I spoke with him towards the end of last season and told him that we would offer him a new contract. When players improve then they deserve their reward and we want to keep him here.”
