Boss: "Good Fixture To Start With"

Steve Davis says Stevenage will give his side the perfect test on the opening day.

Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis says that an opening game of the season at Stevenage will provide the perfect introduction to League Two football for his players.

The Alex are aiming to beat Stevenage for the first time in our history at the Lamex Stadium after previously not doing so on six occasions.

Davis is certainly impressed with the wealth of experience that Stevenage boss Darren Sarll has at his disposal going into the new season.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “Stevenage will be tough. They are at home and come into the game after having a good pre-season in terms of results. They have beaten some teams who play above this level but like I have said, you can never read too much into pre-season results.

“I have watched pre-season games before and studied teams and how they line-up and come the start of the season they are completely different. Their shape might be different or players who didn’t think would start do. We will be the same. We have worked on things in training to give us some flexibility with our shape.

“It will be a good opening game for us. They have a lot of strengths and they have some experienced players to call on. They have Tonge and Lee in midfield, they have McAnuff on the wing and there is plenty of experience in their back four and goalkeeper. They are organised and work hard.

Boss added: “Darren will be looking for a positive start, very much like we are.”
