Boss 'Deeply Disappointed' After Newport Draw

20 August 2016

Steve Davis left rattled by the Exiles' late equaliser

Steve Davis showed his frustration after his Crewe Alexandra side were held to a 1-1 draw at Newport County's Rodney Parade after Sean Rigg headed a late equaliser for the hosts.

Alex Kiwomya had given Crewe the lead with a sublime strike on 16 minutes, and Steve was disappointed his side couldn't close the game out despite playing on a heavy pitch in difficult weather conditions.

He said post-match: "We're deeply disappointed because we knew what we were coming into and what we were up against.

"The pitch was very heavy which made it difficult to play, so I had to abandon the football at stages today and just try to grind out the result which we came close to doing.

"It was just one of those games where there wasn't a lot of space to play. We were very good in the first half and deservedly went in front, then we came really close to scoring the second just before they equalised with Lowey having a really good chance to win us the game.

"They were just going to bombard us with high balls late on and for the best part of it we coped but Riggy got across the defender and glanced one in. I'm really disappointed we lost a goal like that because I want to build a better mentality so that when we're 1-0 up we can close games out."
