Steve: "Really Encouraging From Us"

23 April 2016

Alex boss gives us his post-match reaction from Boundary Park

Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis says our all round performance against Oldham was greatly encouraging. The Alex boss felt that we were the better side on the day and but for some wonderful saves from the Latics goalkeeper Joel Coleman, we could have been celebrating our first win since early February. The busier of the two goalkeepers made fine saves to deny Marcus Haber and Callum Saunders and then sub Brad Inman with the save of the day in the second half.

Following our 1-0 defeat, the boss told us: “It probably summed up our season but if we are just talking about today then I thought we were the better side on the day. I thought we played well and when they play like that it gives everyone great hope. It gives the staff hope and it gives the supporters hope. We were good.

“If we can add three or four good additions to the group then they will be fine next season. We know what we are missing and if we can get those good people in and good players in to provide that influence and help then we will be a better team. The young ones just need that lift and need to develop that winning mentality.

“Of course, you are judged on what we do in the final third and their goalkeeper has made some good saves all afternoon. I was impressed with him. He tipped one over from Marcus, saved from Callum in a one-v-one and made his best save to deny Brad with his curling shot.

“We couldn’t keep that clean sheet at the other end and we ended up losing a game we didn’t really deserve to.

“I thought we kept the ball well and created chances against a side that needed the points to stay up, so they were fighting for their lives. To come to a place like Oldham, which is always a tough place to come and be the better team is encouraging for us.”
