Davis: "Recruitment Has To Improve"

12 April 2016

Crewe Alexandra boss says signings have to be more successful going forward.

Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis admits that the club’s recruitment has not been good enough since we won promotion to League One back in 2012. The Alex boss admits that we haven’t got enough of our key signings right to supplement the emergence of our promising Academy youngsters and that as a club it is an area we have to drastically improve on moving forward.

There has been successes along the way too but Davis says that number has not been sufficient enough to help the first team. He appreciates that he is shopping at a different level to some of the bigger clubs at this level.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “Recruitment is difficult at whatever level you operate. Some come off and others don’t. We haven’t had enough successes and that is something we need to improve on.

“I have been at the club for six years and I don’t think we have cracked it. We know how important it is but also how difficult it is because we have to take more risks on players because of the type we can afford and attract.

“We can have a list of four or five players who we know that can make a massive difference to us but the likelihood of us getting them into the club is restricted because of the competition and what we can afford to pay in wages.

“Therefore, we have to try and get one of those and go down the list for another two or three. That is how it works and we do have to shop at a different level to other clubs.”
