Saunders Injury Opened Door For Ainley

7 September 2015

Slight hamstring injury ruled out Welsh youngster.

Steve Davis revealed that his young forward Callum Saunders was not fit enough to take his place on the substitutes’ bench on Saturday and that prompted a late cameo appearance from Academy graduate Callum Ainley.

Ainley, 17, made his first team bow with five minutes remaining of our home game against Swindon Town when replacing the injured Lauri Dalla Valle after catching the eye for Kenny Lunt’s Under-18 side this season.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “Callum (Saunders) was injured and that is why he wasn’t named on the bench. He had a slight hamstring problem that ruled him out of the Under-21 game in the week.

“He did train on Friday but I like my players to have a few days of training under their belt before they are considered. They sometimes need more than one session, so I decide to go with Callum Ainley.

He added: “We got his shirt done and it was nice for him to get a run out at the end. He has done well this season and scored a number of goals for the Under-18s already this season. He deserved his debut and he is ahead of a few of the other older ones at the moment. “
