Nugent: "We Are Not Far Off"

3 September 2015

Defender feels team is beginning to gel as we go in search of our first win this weekend.

Crewe Alexandra’s summer signing Ben Nugent feels that our first win of the season is not far off after some really promising performances. The Alex defender felt we deserved more from a heartening display at Wigan Athletic last weekend when Crewe lost 1-0 due to a controversial goal from a corner. The referee and his assistant failed to spot a push by goal scorer Michael Jacobs on George Ray and despite having a large proportion of the possession we couldn’t find an equaliser that our display arguably deserved over 90 minutes.

Nugent has told the club’s official web-site that there are encouraging signs of the team beginning to gel.

Ahead of this weekend’s home game with Swindon, the former Cardiff man told us: "As the games go on, the more time we have together and the more we gel I've got no doubts that the points will start to come.

"We'll take a lot from the performance at Wigan. We all felt that we played much better and if all our elements come together we'll pick up points.

"It's a new bunch of players here. It won't always click straight away but we've been working hard on the training ground and we've had another week to work on our shape so hopefully this coming Saturday it will all come together and we'll collect some points."

"From a performance point of view we looked more solid. We got beat by a set piece at Wigan when the boys felt there was a push and that is something that's not happened up to this point so for how we played it's a blow to concede and the referee not spot it.

Ben added: "Unfortunately we didn't keep a clean-sheet at Wigan or find that goal our play probably deserved, but we played well enough and think there's more than enough to be happy about."
