Ben Garratt is becoming an organiser at the back for us.
Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis says that the club’s goalkeeping coach Fred Barber is determined to make our promising young goalkeeper Ben Garratt more vocal and aggressive out on the pitch. The Alex boss wants the 21-year-old stopper to become extra determined to keep the ball out of his net and in doing so become more demanding of the defenders ahead of him.
The Crewe goalkeeper recorded his second clean-sheet of the season in the 1-0 win at Shrewsbury, making a fine one handed save to deny Larnell Cole an equaliser in the second period at the Greenhous Meadow. His manager is after more of the same going forward.
Steve told crewealex.net: “It was a nice to get a clean-sheet at Shrewsbury because we hadn’t had one since the opening day against the Vale.
“I have been on to them about conceding two or three goals a game because we are not going to score three or four goals in reply every week.
“I have said to Ben that he has to keep the ball out of our net and that means being aggressive and vocal with those in front of him.
“He doesn’t want the ball flying into his net and conceding goals because that all reflects on him as a goalkeeper even when he is not necessary to blame. We don’t want to be conceding too many goals and Saturday was a step in the right direction.
He added: “There was a real determination to keep the ball of the net and Ben is getting better with that. He is organising and being vocal and making sure that protection is there.”
