Boss says there won't be many changes for the visit of Wigan for JPT clash.
Steve Davis says he will select a strong side for the visit of Wigan Athletic in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy tomorrow night. The Alex have a few players missing through injury and first choice left-back Stephen Kingsley is away on International duty with Scotland Under-21s, so Jon Guthrie is the favourite for a recall in that position.
The on-loan Harry Wilson is also away on International duty with Wales Under-21s, so there will be another gap on the substitutes’ bench.
The Crewe boss is aiming for a positive performance against one of the league’s better sides, because he believes a result and progression in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy will only enhance the confidence and belief within the dressing room.
Ahead of the visit of Gary Caldwell’s Latics, Steve said: “Our focus will be firmly on getting through to the next round of the competition. It is good competition and we have always taken it seriously. It is a trophy we won not long ago and it was a great day out at Wembley for everyone connected with the club.
“I’m sure the fans would like to go back there and have a run in the competition. We would like to give them something to cheer at the moment and a win against Wigan would certainly do that.
“I will name a strong a team as I can. You have to name six in your starting eleven from the last game so you are restricted to the number of changes you can make anyway.
Steve added: “I will assess the squad and see who perhaps needs a rest and change a couple but it won’t be major changes because we want to do well and get through against one of the strongest teams still in it.”
