Steve: "Spirit Was Excellent"

Steve Davis gives us his post-match reaction from the Pirelli Stadium after goalless draw

Alex boss Steve Davis was delighted with the way his players responded after losing late on to Gillingham on Saturday. They battled away to a earn a hard fought point away from home against a Burton Albion side who have settled into League One life extremely well.

Crewe could have nicked the points but Brad Inman was foiled by the onrushing Jon McLaughlin after he latched onto a short back pass in the second half.

“It was another good point for us away from home and the players responded well from the disappointment of losing late on against Gillingham on Saturday. After a really spirited performance the Alex boss told crewealex.net:

“This time we managed to hold out. We had a couple of late free-kicks that caused us a bit of a concern but I thought we defended well and the spirit has always been good. I cannot fault their work rate or spirit in all the games, they have all been fairly close with the odd goal deciding the result.

“They did really well and worked hard and we got our rewards for that. It is a good point.

“We didn’t create an abundance of great chances and we didn’t have enough spells in the game to do that but Brad did have a great chance when he nipped in on the short back pass. The goalkeeper did well off his line as well to narrow the angle.

“I thought both teams tried to win it after what happened at the weekend. We both had a go and I’m pleased that they got something for their work.

George Ray did typify that spirit in the camp. I asked him a couple of days ago how he felt and he said he was fine to play in the mask so I decided to throw him in. He has been training on his own because of the contact issue but he felt okay and he and Ben were excellent back there. It was a real heroic display from George to come in after a couple of weeks. He was fine, as they all were. “I don’t particularly want to pick anyone out for special praise because I thought they were all excellent but

He added: “I think we have played the top 8 now apart from Sheffield United and we have been in every game. That is the positive to take. There is still a long way to go and a lot of points to play for. We now have to take that confidence into Blackpool on Saturday and try to build on what we have achieved tonight."
